* Sam Worthington is Jake Sully. James Cameron chose
the actor from Australia after searching the globe for
talented young actors. Cameron preferred the relatively
unknown actors to keep the budget down. Sam Worthington
has auditioned twice early in development stage, and he
has agreed to rejoin for possible sequels. James Cameron
thought that Sam Worthington was “game for anything”
because he had not done a major film. He’s giving the
character a really real quality. He has that charisma of
being a guy you would want to spend your time with, and
also the quality of a leader who transforms the world.”
* Zoe Saldana is an alien who’s being betrayed
initially by Jake Sully, but eventually falls in love
with. Zoe Saldana’s character will be hugely generated
by computers. Saldaa has signed on for possible sequels
as well.
* Sigourney Weaver plays a character named Grace, a
botanist who is also Jake Sully’s mentor. Sigourney
Weaver had to dye her hair with red colour for the part.
At one point her character was named “Shipley”. Grace
character reminded Weaver of James Cameron, the director
himself of being “very idealistic and very driven”.
* Michelle Rodriguez is Trudy Chacon, a former Marine
pilot and now retired. James Cameron admitted that he
had wanted to work with Michelle Rodriguez since seeing
her role in a movie called Girlfight (2000).
